We have a wireless network at our office. Can we give guests the wireless code to connect when they are at our office?

Last Updated: 11 years ago in Security – Return to Knowledgebase

You shouldn’t. When you have guests using your network with their laptop, no one really knows what is sitting on it (malware, virus, key logger). Oftentimes even your guest is not aware of the problems, and they simply spread the infections as they go from one location to another. Many wireless connections in offices are setup on the internal network which means an infection can spread directly to your servers and workstations. A better configuration to limit exposure is to have a special guest wireless network that is dedicated to a separate public IP address – which means they are not part of your internal network. It is our opinion that limiting access to foreign machines on the network is best, but we understand that in order to conduct business you need to give your partners and clients web access while at your office.
