We share our Internet connection with the next door neighbor (to reduce cost) – are we taking any risks?

Yes you are. When you share your network with another company, you are opening your network to infections, hacks or anything else that may come from your neighbors.  There are some fancy workarounds by using multiple firewalls to limit the risk, but in general you are better off running your own private connection to the Internet.
