Can I upgrade from Win XP Pro to Win 7 Pro (in-place upgrade)?

Last Updated: 12 years ago in System Integration – Return to Knowledgebase

You can’t. Windows XP doesn’t allow for an in-place upgrade. The way to do it is to get all of your data files to a backup drive, and even consider starting a new installation to a new hard drive (if the original one is over 3 years – which is very likely). We recommend replacing drives over the age of 3 years because that is the time frame that the drive will probably start developing bad sectors, bad blocks and mechanical errors. It will be in your best interest to have the new Win 7 pro installed to a new hard drive. After you get your OS installed, and fully patched, you can install your programs and copy your data. Most end users will contact us for such upgrades, and we will be happy to assist you upgrading one system or your entire office machines. Please note that April 8, 2014 is a critical deadline for removing all XP computers and using Win 7 Pro, or Win 8.1 Pro
